Date Night: Finding Space for Us Amid the Chaos
Why Date Night Matters When You’re an Exhausted Parent
Parenthood Takes Everything
Parenthood is full of moments that demand everything from us.
We’re constantly giving—our attention, our patience, our energy. From the second we wake up to the moment we finally fall into bed, someone needs something.
And by the end of the day, it can feel like there’s nothing left… especially for ourselves, and especially for our partner.
When You Realise You’ve Drifted
Last week, after a particularly chaotic day filled with spills, tantrums, and constant noise, I realised something.
My partner and I hadn’t had real time together in weeks.
Not quick chats in passing.
Not tired conversations on the couch.
But real, intentional time—just us.
So we decided to do something about it. We planned a date night.
Why Date Night Matters (Even When You Feel Like You Can’t)
Earlier that day, I snapped.
Not because I wanted to — but because I was overwhelmed, overstimulated, and running on empty.
And like so many parents, I carried the guilt. But stepping out—even briefly—reminded me:
- We are more than just mum and dad.
- We’re partners. People who chose each other.
Date night isn’t just about going out.
It’s about resetting.
- Remembering why you chose each other
- Talking about more than daily tasks
- Laughing and reconnecting
- Giving yourself permission to pause
How to Make Date Night Actually Happen
1. Keep it simple
It doesn’t have to be big.
A coffee, a walk, or even a movie at home counts.
2. Pause the guilt
That voice will say:
“You shouldn’t go.”
But your kids are safe. It’s okay to take time for yourself.
3. Let go of perfection
The house might be messy.
That’s okay. It will still be there later.
4. Protect the time
Put your phone down. Ignore the distractions. Be present with each other.
5. Treat it as a reset
You’re not escaping your life—you’re reconnecting within it.
A Small Reset Changes Everything
Date night won’t fix everything overnight.
But it reminds you of something important:
You’re allowed to pause.
You’re allowed to enjoy connection.
You’re allowed to take care of yourself too.
And when you do—you come back calmer, more present, and more like yourself again.
Take a Moment for Yourself
Even small rituals can help you slow down and reset.
Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea, a calming candle, or a relaxing soak—these moments matter.
